Philip Smith's work has been recognised with many awards. It has ranged across a variety of genres from documentary film to factual drama and combined strong human narratives with visual flair. He has made films in the worlds of music, sport, arts, science, history and travel and has received critical acclaim for powerful storytelling and a strong and innovative visual style.
He directed two authored films in the Sports Emmy nominated (Outstanding Music Direction) Amazon Original documentary event series This is Football. The series explores the emotions, stories, passions and triumphs at the heart of the world’s most loved sport. It launched on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
Previous work also includes: a film for Sky Arts with a unique take on the solo music of The Beatles; the BBC drama-documentary Frankenstein and The Vampyre (narrated by Claire Foy); a documentary with the artist Damien Hirst; Superfly, a highly individual retelling of a century of genetics that received a Royal Television Society Award; two films in the BAFTA and RTS award-winning series This is Modern Art; a film in the BAFTA and RTS nominated BBC series Seven Wonders of the Industrial World; a 3D short and the opening film in the digital Emmy and new media BAFTA winning BBC production The Virtual Revolution.
